Since it was acquired by Facebook in 2012, Instagram has grown to more than five times the size of Snapchat. Now, it’s coming after YouTube.

Gone are the 60 second video limits. With the launch of IGTV, users can watch videos that are up to an hour long. While there’s a stand-alone IGTV app, you’ll also be able to watch from within the Instagram app so the entire community of one billion users can use it from the very start.

It is hoped that IGTV will rival YouTube by permitting people to create and publish video content up to 10 minutes long for regular users; an hour for those with massive audiences. Uniquely, IGTV are using a portrait layout for their videos, as opposed to the usual landscape, as they feel it fits more naturally with the way that audiences use their devices.

“The tools we watch video on are old and out of date,” Systrom said onstage at the launch. “Think about it – we still watch videos formatted for TV, on a vertical screen.”

Initially, IGTV will be pre-populated with videos produced by celebrities; including Kim Kardashian-West and Lele Pons. Users will then be able to post their own content and share from either of the apps. Unlike Instagram itself, no one will be paid for their videos and ads will not be permitted to begin with, however, this is bound to change.

With other tech firms such as Facebook and Snapchat investing heavily into the growth of mobile video services, it is no surprise that Instagram are jumping on the video content bandwagon.
